    Hello,

    I am looking to see what colleges and universities have campus safety or campus police utilizing body worn cameras. Do they utilize cameras or not? Are they permitted in the residence halls when responding to a situation? Are they permitted in a student unit when responding? Is video footage available for staff to review? What does your policy look like if body worn cameras are utilized by campus staff in regards to residence halls? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Dear Justin,

    Our Public Safety (PS) Officers utilize body cams in residential spaces, as well as other places on campus. As a private institution, PS officers are permitted in student spaces when dealing with a situation, or there is cause for them to enter a student space and the student is not there (i.e. drugs are found during a health and safety inspection, which usually leads to a room search being authorized with or without the ).  Overall, it has been a positive experience. We definitely review footage, when needed - which has been very helpful when a student says they were treated unfairly, or stories do not align.  We don't have any policies/procedures that are specific to body cam footage in residential spaces, but instead follow the guidelines PS have for using body cam footage on-campus.

    Hello Justin. Our police department officers utilize body cameras and there is no specific policy governing their use when officers respond to our residence halls. More details about their policies governing body cameras can be found within the publically accessible general order here.

    Hi, Justin, I am sorry that I am just now seeing this message.  At Centre College, our DPS officers wear body cameras. I would love to sit down and discuss the benefits and drawbacks we have seen.
